ATP’s AI-powered Safe Sport Initiative intercepted more than 162,000 instances of severe online abuse against top male tennis players in its first year.
Between July 2023 and June 2024, the system scanned over 3.1 million messages sent to the world’s top 245 singles players and flagged abusive comments in real time. Abuse accounted for one in ten messages overall and reached up to 50% on some players’ profiles.
Escalations and Actions
The ATP reports that 3,300 comments were escalated for further action, identifying 68 abusers, with 28 cases referred to law enforcement. Despite these measures, some abusive content still evades detection.
