Kenya's Beatrice Chebet Eyes Historic 5,000m-10,000m Double in Tokyo

After clinching her first world title in the 10,000m, Kenya's Beatrice Chebet targets a rare 5,000m-10,000m double at the World Championships.

Beatrice Chebet captured her first world title in the 10,000m on the opening day in Tokyo, adding to her Olympic, Commonwealth and cross-country successes. Now 25, she aims to become just the third woman ever to complete the 5,000m-10,000m double at the World Championships, a feat achieved only by Tirunesh Dibaba in 2005 and Vivian Cheruiyot in 2011.

Chebet outsprinted defending champion Gudaf Tsegay with 200m remaining, finishing in 30:37.61. “I came for nothing short of gold,” she said. “Becoming world champion was all that mattered.”

World records and fierce ambition

Over the past two years, Chebet set world records in the 10,000m (28:54.14) and 5,000m (13:58.06), breaking long-standing barriers at Hayward Field. Reflecting on her rise from a 16-minute 5,000m runner, she said, “Trusting the process turned my dreams into reality.”

Chasing the double

On Thursday she will contest the 5,000m heats, with a final scheduled for Saturday. She faces rivals including defending champion Faith Kipyegon and Tsegay. Chebet aims to emulate Cheruiyot and inspire young athletes to chase their dreams without limits.

Chebet’s mix of historic wins and world records positions her as a leading contender for an unprecedented 5,000m-10,000m double in Tokyo.
