Apple TV functions best as a complement to other iOS and macOS devices, as its standalone capabilities remain limited.

Apple TV can be seen as a subtle Trojan horse for the living room: a small, affordable, and unassuming device hinting at future possibilities. While some view its future skeptically, I believe Apple TV represents a crucial platform to conquer. Despite the rise of smartphones and tablets, the television remains the focal point of home entertainment, especially when watching with family or friends. Apple’s ecosystem simplifies this shared viewing experience.

Although many predict the decline of traditional television, the TV set itself will continue to be the centerpiece of digital entertainment. Apple TV has been neglected to the extent that Steve Jobs, known for his design perfectionism, likely would not have allowed it to remain a minor hobby rather than a core pillar of Apple’s ecosystem. Time for innovation is running out.

Debates continue on whether Apple should refine Apple TV as a set-top box or develop a complete Apple-branded television. Producing a full television set involves higher costs and longer product lifecycles, which may deter Apple. Yet, with the introduction of high-end products like the Mac Pro, Apple has demonstrated readiness to enter premium markets. The issue is not profitability but strategic alignment.

Televisions, computers, and mobile devices are converging into unified platforms. It’s puzzling why Apple tolerates competitors like Samsung, Sony, and LG dominating living rooms with their smart TVs, while Apple TV remains a modest black box. Although Apple TV performs well for its core functions, it lacks advanced features such as FaceTime calls, gesture controls, or voice commands—capabilities now standard in Samsung’s latest Smart TVs.

Samsung’s integration of cameras, sensors, and voice controls offers an immersive user experience that Apple TV cannot match due to its hardware constraints. Suggestions to use iPads or iPhones as remote controls or sensory extensions for Apple TV feel cumbersome and inelegant, contradicting Apple’s design ethos.

Moreover, upcoming gaming consoles like Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 incorporate built-in cameras and sensors, enabling direct user interaction, while Apple’s device remains a silent, unresponsive box. Although these consoles require external accessories, manufacturers have integrated these features seamlessly into the display.

Apple’s hallmark is simplifying technology by removing unnecessary complexity. Regardless of the price, a future Apple TV or Apple television must embody sleek, intelligent design without cluttered wires or bulky remotes—standards Apple consistently upholds.

If companies like LG, Samsung, and Sony can mass-produce profitable televisions, Apple is equally capable. Having revolutionized its manufacturing process for the specialized Mac Pro, Apple has the expertise to create a television that becomes the cornerstone of its living room strategy. Until then, my trusty Apple TV will continue to operate quietly, wedged between the TV and the wall.
