Rajasthan Farmer Transforms Home into School for Village Children
A Rajasthan farmer donates his two-room house to serve as an upper primary school after floods destroy the village school.
A Farmer’s Sacrifice
Mor Singh, 60, of Piplodi in western Rajasthan never attended school, yet after floods washed away the village school, he converted his two-room home into a makeshift upper primary school. Today, 50–60 students in grades one through eight attend classes in his former residence.
Government Aid and Challenges
Last week, the state government provided Singh with a 200,000-rupee (US$2,266) grant to run operations. Rajasthan recorded its wettest July in nearly 70 years with 285 mm of rain. On July 25, the original school’s rooftop collapsed, killing seven children and injuring 21, leaving the building unusable.

Temporary Shelter and Future Plans
Two days after the collapse, Singh’s family moved into a bamboo-and-tarpaulin shelter erected near his home. He says he acted quickly to prevent students, especially younger ones, from dropping out, since the nearest alternative school is a two-kilometer climb in hilly terrain.
Wider Impact
The tragedy exposed systemic infrastructure issues in Rajasthan, where over 5,600 schools are in disrepair. Following Singh’s initiative, Piplodi has been declared a “model village” under a federal scheme. Local official Ajay Singh Rathore says the designation will attract funds for a new school building, playground, and health center, though construction may take 18 months.

Local Hero
Among 90 families in Piplodi, mostly from tribal communities, Singh’s act has made him a local celebrity. Residents say his sacrifice ensures children can continue their education and pursue their goals.
Mor Singh’s selfless act not only saved his village’s education but highlighted the urgent need to improve school infrastructure across Rajasthan.
