“If common sense prevails, we can find an acceptable solution to end this conflict,” Putin said. “Otherwise, we will resolve our tasks on the battlefield.”
He praised former President Donald Trump’s willingness to seek a resolution, despite recent tensions after Russia’s continued attacks on Ukraine.
Trump has proposed a meeting between Putin and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, but Putin said there was no guaranteed benefit without proper preparation. He noted Zelensky could visit Moscow—an idea Ukraine’s foreign minister swiftly dismissed as unacceptable.
Zelensky has used Putin’s reluctance to meet as leverage to urge Trump to impose tougher sanctions on Russia and strengthen Ukraine’s defenses.
Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Putin spoke after attending a large military parade in Beijing hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping, attended by North Korea’s Kim Jong Un and around 20 other leaders. The event was viewed as a challenge to the US-led global order.
Asked if the war could end soon, Putin acknowledged “a certain light at the end of the tunnel” but stressed Russia would not cede the Donbas region. He reiterated that Ukraine must abandon NATO membership aspirations and halt discrimination against ethnic Russians—one of Moscow’s pretexts for the invasion.
Putin signals that without a negotiated settlement, Russia is prepared to secure its aims through continued military action.
