Ukraine urges energy ban
Speaking to ABC News, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed Trump’s new sanctions and called on European countries to stop importing Russian oil and gas. “We must halt any energy deals with Russia to cut off their war funding,” he said.
Escalating attacks and sanctions
Russia carried out its largest aerial bombardment of the conflict, firing over 800 drones and missiles at Ukraine, including a strike on Kyiv’s main government building. Trump condemned the attack and said he was “not happy with the whole situation.”
Since the full-scale invasion in March 2022, Russia has earned nearly $1 trillion from energy exports, mainly to China and India. The EU has reduced but not ended its purchases, planning a total ban by 2027.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told NBC that imposing secondary tariffs on countries buying Russian oil could collapse Russia’s economy and force Putin to negotiate. “We are in a race between how long Ukraine can hold and how long Russia can sustain its war effort,” he said.
Secondary sanctions and an energy import ban are seen as critical tools to pressure Russia and bring it to the negotiating table.
