Inside the Royal Family: Why Prince Philip Opposed Meghan and Harry's Union
Explore the reasons behind Prince Philip's reservations about Meghan Markle's marriage to Prince Harry, revealing insights into royal traditions and family dynamics.
Before his passing, the Duke of Edinburgh consistently advised his grandson against harboring illusions about relationships with actresses, believing they couldn't embody the role of compliant spouses.
Prince Philip, whose death marked a significant loss for the palace, was a pivotal figure within the British royal family. His opinions were highly regarded, and his humor was genuinely appreciated across the United Kingdom.
Throughout his life, Philip maintained a deep respect for royal traditions and diligently adhered to protocol. He was keen on ensuring that all his young relatives found suitable partners. It was clear he did not view Meghan Markle as an equal match for his grandson.

According to Prince Philip, the lifestyle of the American actress clashed with the British sense of restraint.
"You may date actresses, but no one marries them," the Duke of Edinburgh reportedly told Prince Harry.
Philip even drew parallels between Meghan and Wallis Simpson, whose relationship with King Edward VIII led to his abdication. Both women were divorced and hailed from the United States.

Historical records show that in December 1936, King Edward VIII abdicated the British throne to marry Wallis Simpson, a twice-divorced American. The crown passed to his younger brother, George VI, and Edward was barred from returning to his homeland.
The situation bears some resemblance to the "Megxit" scenario. Initially, Prince Harry considered splitting his time between two countries with Meghan, but ultimately, the couple settled permanently in Santa Barbara.

Despite his grandfather’s skepticism and the doubts of other family members, Harry proposed to Meghan. The Queen informed Meghan she would need to give up her acting career and offered an alternative—Elizabeth stepped down from managing her beloved British theater and appointed Miss Markle to the position.
The wedding took place in 2018, yet Philip frequently cautioned Harry to be careful in his family life. His distrust of the American actress undoubtedly affected Meghan's relationship with him. They never fully achieved mutual understanding or friendship, although Markle consistently treated the Duke with respect and even wished for her husband to attend Philip’s farewell ceremony.
"Meghan believes that this moment calls for the family to come together, set aside differences, and unite. She said this was what Prince Philip would have wanted and that she is ready to forgive and move forward. Whether Meghan attends Prince Philip’s funeral won’t change her relationship with the Queen. Markle feels this is the right time for Harry to mend ties with his brother and father, and she doesn’t need to be there for that," friends of the former actress shared with journalists.
