Great Britain finish World Championships without gold for first time in 22 years

GB ended the Tokyo World Athletics Championships with five medals and no gold, their worst performance in over two decades.

GB miss gold as medal target collapses

Great Britain and Northern Ireland completed the Tokyo World Athletics Championships without a gold medal for the first time since 2001.

The 64-strong British squad secured five medals over nine days, equalling their lowest return since Helsinki in 2005 when they won three. They also finished 21st in the medal table, well below their target of a top-eight finish.

Close calls and injuries

Jake Wightman claimed silver in the men’s 1500m and Amy Hunt took silver in the women’s 200m. Katarina Johnson-Thompson added bronze in the heptathlon, while Georgia Hunter Bell and Keely Hodgkinson shared bronze and silver respectively in the 800m, edged out by Kenya’s Lilian Odira.

Several athletes faced setbacks: defending 1500m champion Josh Kerr and pole vaulter Molly Caudery withdrew through injury, marathon runner Emile Cairess did not finish amid high humidity, and 400m specialist Matthew Hudson-Smith exited early.

Relay disappointment

None of the relay teams reached the podium for the first time since Paris 2003. The women’s 4x100m quartet missed bronze by 0.2 seconds, and the men’s 4x100m squad failed to finish their heat.

Despite individual successes, Great Britain’s overall performance fell short of expectations, marking their poorest World Championships in more than 20 years.
