Highlights

  • General Motors and Honda have commenced manufacturing hydrogen fuel cells at their Michigan-based facility.
  • Both automakers emphasize hydrogen and fuel cell technology as pivotal in lowering vehicle greenhouse gas emissions and advancing sustainable mobility solutions.
  • The Fuel Cell System Manufacturing (FCSM) plant is dedicated to producing fuel cells for diverse applications across GM and Honda’s product lines and business initiatives.

In a groundbreaking collaboration, General Motors Co. (GM) and Honda Motor Co. (HMC) officially began producing hydrogen fuel cells through their equally owned joint venture in Michigan.

This venture, named Fuel Cell System Manufacturing (FCSM), marks the first large-scale partnership focused on fuel cell production, setting a new standard in clean energy manufacturing.

Established in January 2017 with an $85 million investment, FCSM operates a 70,000-square-foot facility currently employing 80 skilled workers. The hydrogen fuel cells produced here will be integrated into various innovative products and projects developed by both automakers.

FCSM Vice President Tetsuo Suzuki expressed confidence in meeting future demands, stating the company is poised to support the emerging hydrogen era and the expanding applications of fuel cell technology.

Since 2013, GM and Honda engineers have collaborated to design the next-generation fuel cell system now manufactured at FCSM. This advanced system promises enhanced performance, doubled durability, and a significant reduction in production costs. Both companies foresee hydrogen and fuel cell technologies playing an increasingly vital role in achieving diverse zero-emission energy and mobility goals.

On the financial front, Honda Motor’s American depositary receipts (ADRs) remained stable, while GM’s shares saw a 1.3% increase during intraday trading around 1:30 p.m. ET.
