So far, 14 individuals, including several Nigerians and one Gambian, have arrived. Ghana has facilitated the return of the Nigerian deportees by bus, while the Gambian continues to receive assistance.
Under the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) free movement protocol, citizens of member countries can enter and reside in Ghana without a visa. “We were approached by the US to accept third-party nationals, and we agreed that West African citizens are acceptable,” Mahama said.
The move follows earlier US deportations of migrants to countries such as Rwanda, Eswatini and South Sudan. While some African states have resisted, Ghana’s decision reflects its commitment to regional cooperation.
Ghana leverages Ecowas’s free movement rules to become the latest partner in the US deportation initiative.
