Britain’s Francesca Jones, 24, secured her inaugural US Open main draw place with a 6-2 6-4 victory over Arianne Hartono in the final qualifying round. The Bradford-born world number 86 will join Emma Raducanu, Katie Boulter and Sonay Kartal in the women’s singles, starting Sunday.
Jones broke Hartono’s serve immediately, capitalising on four unforced errors to race to a 4-0 lead in 16 minutes. Despite Hartono’s 13 winners, her own 13 errors proved costly.
The second set remained on serve until Jones, top seed in qualifying, fought back from 15-40 in the third game to notch her third break. Although Hartono briefly responded, Jones regained control with a decisive break before closing out the match with 10 straight points on her serve.
The win earns Jones $10,000 for reaching the first round.
Jones’s powerful performance under pressure highlights her growing presence on the big stage and sets up a promising US Open debut.
