An adult human body contains approximately 3–4 grams of iron (about 0.02%), with only around 3.5 milligrams circulating in the blood plasma. Roughly 68% of this iron is found in hemoglobin, 27% in ferritin, 4% in myoglobin, and 0.1% in transferrin.

Iron’s key functions include:

Unusual Symptoms of Iron Deficiency

Brittle nails can reveal iron deficiency. Nails may become thin and spoon-shaped, a condition called koilonychia, where they appear to sink into the skin.

Cracked lips, especially painful splits at the corners of the mouth, can indicate iron deficiency. While dry air or cold weather can cause lip cracks, iron deficiency-related cracks, known as angular cheilitis, are particularly stubborn and affect about 35% of cases.

An inflamed, swollen tongue (atrophic glossitis) is another vivid symptom. The tongue may become smooth and overly sensitive, interfering with speech, chewing, and swallowing.

Ice chewing, or pagophagia, is a distinctive behavior linked to iron deficiency. Though the exact cause is unknown, it’s thought that chewing ice may improve alertness or soothe a swollen tongue. People with this symptom often consume from one cup up to a kilogram of ice daily.

Tingling or restless sensations in the legs, known as restless leg syndrome, can also be associated with iron deficiency. This uncomfortable feeling prompts constant leg movement and can disrupt sleep.

Other symptoms include dizziness, rapid fatigue, apathy, concentration difficulties, weakened immunity, digestive and circulatory issues, loss of appetite, and shortness of breath.

If you notice several of these signs, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional and get a blood test. Based on your results, a doctor might recommend dietary adjustments or prescribe iron supplements. Self-medicating can cause liver problems or bone loss, potentially leading to osteoporosis.
