Beware: Over 30 Popular iOS Apps Infected Through Compromised Development Tool

Discover how a modified version of a key iOS development tool led to malware infections in multiple popular apps and what you can do to protect your device.

Recently, more than 30 iOS applications available on the App Store were found to be infected with malware through a tampered version of Xcode, the official software used for developing iOS apps. Cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks has identified and published a list of affected apps, urging users to remove these from their devices immediately.

Apple responded promptly by removing the infected apps from the App Store. However, before this action, several widely-used applications, including the popular messaging platform WeChat among Chinese users, contained malicious code capable of compromising user security.

Palo Alto Networks reported that at least 39 apps were compromised, with some designed to steal user passwords or trick users into clicking harmful links. Apple has not disclosed the total number of removed apps but is actively working with developers to ensure they rebuild their apps using a legitimate version of Xcode to prevent further infections.

Below is the list of affected apps identified by Palo Alto Networks:

  • WeChat
