Discover how Russian cinema is making waves at the Oscars with gripping stories and profound documentaries that inspire and provoke thought.
Final nominees for the prestigious awards will be revealed on March 15.
The historical drama Dear Comrades!, directed by Andrei Konchalovsky, earned a spot on the Oscar shortlist for Best International Feature Film. Competing against 14 other remarkable films, including Another Round starring Mads Mikkelsen, this movie tells a powerful story rooted in Soviet history.
Set in 1962 Novochercassk, the film vividly portrays a workers' strike at the main city factory demanding lower food prices and higher wages. As the movement spreads across other enterprises, the government responds by deploying the army to the city, capturing a tense and poignant moment in history.
In addition, the documentary Gunda by Russian director Viktor Kossakovsky has also made the shortlist for Best Documentary Feature. Executive produced by Joaquin Phoenix, this evocative film explores the essence of life and consciousness through intimate encounters with a pig named Gunda, alongside cows and a chicken, encouraging viewers to reflect on the intrinsic value of animal life.
The 93rd Academy Awards final nominations will be announced on March 15, with the ceremony scheduled for April 25.
