Unlocking Luck: Proven Psychological Strategies to Attract Good Fortune
Discover scientifically backed methods to boost your luck and transform your mindset for a more fortunate life.
Have you ever noticed that some people seem to have all the luck? A psychology professor from England uncovered the reasons behind this phenomenon and revealed how anyone can become a magnet for good fortune.
What Sets Lucky People Apart?
Richard Wiseman, a psychology professor at the University of Hertfordshire, explored the differences between those who consider themselves lucky and those who often feel unlucky.
His research found that lucky individuals tend to be highly extroverted. They smile twice as often and maintain eye contact more frequently. Wiseman believes that being sociable and open helps attract positive opportunities.
In contrast, unlucky people often experience emotional instability, anxiety, and negative emotions.
Wiseman conducted intriguing experiments to understand anxiety’s effect on perception. One group was asked to focus on a moving dot at the center of a computer screen. After a while, large dots appeared in the corners, which nearly all participants noticed. Another group was offered a monetary reward to keep their focus on the central dot. Over a third of these participants, stressed by the incentive, failed to notice the peripheral dots.
This experiment demonstrated that while anxiety sharpens focus on a single task, it can blind us to new possibilities.
Unlucky people tend to miss chances because they fixate on one problem, whereas lucky individuals remain open to new experiences.
In another test, participants were asked to count photos in a newspaper. Unlucky participants took about two minutes, while lucky ones completed the task in seconds. The newspaper had a message on the second page saying, "Stop counting. There are 43 photos in this newspaper." Lucky people noticed this immediately, showing greater attentiveness.
Lucky people also maintain a more optimistic outlook. Even when things don’t go as planned, they look for the silver lining.
Three Ways to Attract Luck
Wiseman also investigated whether people can increase their luck through specific exercises. After one month, 80% of participants reported feeling happier, more satisfied with life, and notably luckier.
Here’s what Wiseman recommended:
1. Broaden Your Perspective
Constantly worrying about achieving your goals can cause you to overlook promising opportunities. Stay open to new experiences to increase your chances of catching a lucky break.
2. Cultivate a Positive Mindset
Don’t focus solely on the negative. This mindset drains your energy. Instead of complaining, practice gratitude for what hasn’t gone wrong.
3. Try Something New This Week
Routine can be draining. If you interact with the same people, eat the same foods, and follow the same schedule daily, try to shake things up. Stepping out of your comfort zone boosts your chances of encountering luck.
While some are born with advantages, blaming circumstances or others for your misfortunes won’t help. Take responsibility for your happiness and open yourself to luck.
