Unlock Classic Gaming Magic with RetroArch: Your Ultimate Retro Emulator Hub

Install RetroArch on your PC, smartphone, or TV box to relive the nostalgic thrill of your favorite childhood games across multiple classic consoles.

Experience the timeless joy of classic games by installing RetroArch, a versatile emulator that brings your childhood favorites back to life.

What is RetroArch?

RetroArch serves as a comprehensive frontend for dozens of emulators covering retro consoles, computers, and arcade machines. Unlike juggling multiple emulators with varying interfaces and settings, RetroArch offers a unified game library with intuitive navigation and sorting.

This means you no longer need to switch between different apps or wonder which emulator suits which platform—simply pick a game, and it launches instantly. The collection beautifully merges beloved titles from Sega Mega Drive, PlayStation, Super Nintendo, Game Boy Advance, and many more.

RetroArch supports nearly all gamepads, displays game covers and screenshots, lets you create playlists, enhances visuals, and offers a wealth of other handy features. It’s highly customizable and runs smoothly on smartphones, tablets, PCs, TV boxes, single-board computers, and gaming consoles.

Getting Started with RetroArch

Installation

RetroArch is available for Windows, macOS, Linux—including legacy versions like Windows 95 or Mac OS X PowerPC. It also runs on Android, iOS, and numerous gaming consoles from PlayStation 2 to Nintendo Switch.

To install, visit the official website via this link, download the installer for your device, then run it and follow the setup prompts. Once installed, launch RetroArch from your applications menu.

Changing Language

By default, RetroArch uses your system language, often English. You can switch to other languages like Russian, but note that localization may be incomplete.

To change language, navigate to Settings > User > Language and select your preferred option. We recommend English for the best experience and consistent menu references. If you prefer another language, adjust settings first, then switch.

Configuring Your Gamepad

Game controllers are detected automatically—just connect your gamepad, and RetroArch will recognize it. It supports a wide range of controllers, including DualShock 4, Xbox One S Controller, and various wired or wireless third-party devices.

Set hotkeys for quick menu access via Settings > Input > Hotkey Binds > Menu Toggle Gamepad Combo. Default is L3 + R3, but for controllers without analog sticks (like Super Nintendo pads), L1 + R1 + Select + Start might be more convenient.

Downloading Emulator Cores

RetroArch starts without emulators. You download cores—modular emulators—for each console. Multiple cores may exist per platform; you can select which to use when launching a game.

Adding Games

Games run via ROM files—digital copies of cartridges. ROMs are widely found online by searching "ROMs <console name>". Note: using ROMs is legal only if you own the original game cartridge.
