Steve Wozniak Clarifies: Steve Jobs Was Not Fired from Apple — He Left Voluntarily

According to Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs was never fired from Apple but chose to leave on his own accord.

The 1985 controversy at Apple is often cited as the moment Steve Jobs was dismissed from the company. The popular narrative suggests that a series of missteps, including an attempt to remove then-CEO John Sculley, led to Jobs' ousting. However, Steve Wozniak disputes this version of events, sharing his perspective on Facebook*.

Steve Jobs was not fired from Apple. He made the decision to leave. At that time, he was facing multiple setbacks. While he spearheaded a successful marketing campaign for the Apple II, products like the Apple III, Lisa, and Macintosh failed to achieve financial success. After the Macintosh's disappointing performance, Jobs' confidence waned, and he felt ashamed of these failures.

In his renowned 2005 Stanford University commencement speech, Jobs reflected on this period, noting that Apple had just launched its groundbreaking creation—the Macintosh—while he had just turned 30. He expressed his surprise, saying, "How can you be fired from a company you started?"

Jobs attributed his departure to the executives he had hired and the Board of Directors.

John Sculley, who was Apple's CEO at the time, offered his account:

Steve was never fired. He took a creative sabbatical and remained Chairman of the Board. No one pushed him out of the company, but we did remove him from the Mac development team, which he never forgave me for.

Following his reassignment and creative leave, Jobs was given a small house on Apple's campus. Walter Isaacson’s biography "Steve Jobs" reveals that Jobs referred to this house as "Siberia," likening it to an exile.
