Southeast Asians Send Food via Grab and Gojek to Support Indonesian Delivery Riders Amid Protests

Support campaign sees Southeast Asians ordering meals via Grab and Gojek for Indonesian delivery riders amid protests over cost of living and inequality.

Indonesia’s mass protests ignited a wave of solidarity across Southeast Asia, where people are using Grab and Gojek apps to send meals and supplies to delivery riders on the front lines.

Regional Solidarity Through Apps

In Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Thailand, social media users have rallied under the hashtag #SEAblings to place food orders for Indonesian riders. They advise drivers to keep or share the meals with their families and fellow protesters.

Personal Stories Behind the Support

Tara from Cebu has twice ordered meals and bottled water for riders in Jakarta, saying she felt compelled after experiencing Indonesia’s motorcycle taxis during her travels. “They’ve always been friendly. Sending food is the only way I can help right now,” she told INLIBER.

In Manila, Tara translated a Tagalog guide to encourage Filipinos to join the effort and expressed solidarity with protesters fighting government corruption. Similarly, Malaysian student Ayman Hareez Muhammad Adib praised Indonesians for their unity and courage in tackling injustice.

Riders’ Perspectives

Delivery riders in West Jakarta report that overseas orders have arrived at a time when protests have slowed normal business. “Orders have been quiet since the demonstrations began. This food is really helpful,” said Taufik, a local Gojek driver.

Videos on social platforms show riders moved to tears upon receiving meals from strangers abroad, with many sharing their packages with colleagues.

Protests Fuelled by Cost of Living and Inequality

Demonstrations erupted on 25 August in response to rising living costs, social inequality and parliamentary perks considered excessive. They turned violent after a police vehicle fatally struck Gojek driver Affan Kurniawan, intensifying public outrage and leading to at least 10 deaths.

President Prabowo Subianto and the national police chief apologized for the tragedy and announced reforms to lawmakers’ allowances, but protests have persisted nationwide.

Under the hashtag #SEAblings, Southeast Asians have turned to delivery apps as a unique expression of solidarity, providing food and hope to Indonesian riders amid social unrest.
