Russian Court Declares Meta an Extremist Organization, Halts Facebook and Instagram Operations
A landmark ruling by a Moscow court has labeled Meta as an extremist group, resulting in an immediate suspension of Facebook and Instagram services in Russia. WhatsApp remains unaffected.

The Tverskoy District Court in Moscow has officially banned Meta’s activities within Russia, categorizing the company as an extremist organization. Consequently, Facebook and Instagram must cease operations immediately.
According to a representative from the Prosecutor General's Office, users of these platforms will not face legal penalties. However, all advertising activities and commercial engagements related to Facebook and Instagram are now prohibited.
Media outlets are mandated to label these social networks as banned within Russia and remove all associated logos, which are also subject to prohibition.
Notably, these restrictions do not extend to WhatsApp, another Meta-owned messaging service.
Facebook and Instagram had already been blocked across Russia since early March following directives from the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor).
