The object was detected on May 24 at 10:00 UTC through optical wavelength observations. The image, taken with the C2 telescope, measures 1024 × 1024 pixels and was captured using a CCD sensor. Calculations suggest the structure hovered roughly two million kilometers above the Sun's surface, stretching an astonishing 150,000 kilometers wide.
The image reveals vivid, bright details trailing behind the object, giving it a comet-like tail or a fiery streak. Notably, no similar formations appeared in frames captured before or after this event, underscoring its uniqueness.
Astronomer Alexander Kiselev suggests the object could be a comet passing extremely close to the Sun. The elongated shape and accompanying bright fragments might indicate the nucleus is beginning to disintegrate under intense solar heat.
Despite the compelling comet hypothesis, the Space Research Institute emphasizes that drawing firm conclusions is premature. There is also the possibility this is a rare optical phenomenon, perhaps caused by light reflections or plasma activity within the Sun's corona.
