Such was the case recently in Algeria, where news of Omar bin Omran’s fate spread nationwide. Twenty-seven years ago, as a teenager, Omar disappeared, and after exhaustive searches, his family presumed him dead. Astonishingly, he had been held captive only 200 meters from his home all along.
This incident unfolded in Djelfa, a city with a population of approximately 550,000 people, located about three hours from the capital. Local media reported the incredible story.
Omar disappeared in 1996. That morning, he left for school but never came back. At the time, the country was engulfed in a civil war, leading his family to believe he had fallen victim to the violence. In reality, a neighbor had abducted him and kept him confined within his own home for nearly three decades.
Now 45 years old, Omar was discovered due to a family dispute. The man who kidnapped him had a falling out with his brother over inheritance. In retaliation, the brother revealed on social media that Omar was being hidden at the property.
The police took notice of the post and found Omar in a sheep pen, trapped in a well covered by a haystack. It is believed Omar was unable to call for help because he was under the influence of drugs. Locals also speculate that the kidnapper performed "magical rituals" on Omar, which suppressed his consciousness.
Authorities are still investigating the full details. The kidnapper, a 61-year-old man who reportedly worked as a government employee and lived alone, will face legal consequences. Omar, freed from captivity on May 12, is currently receiving medical and psychological care and is recovering from the trauma.
Tragically, Omar’s mother passed away in 2013 without ever knowing her son was alive and so close to home. Fortunately, Omar has since reunited with his family and cousins, who say the nightmare is finally over for them.
