Luke Shaw Supports Ruben Amorim's Push to Transform Manchester United's Culture

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw endorses head coach Ruben Amorim's strict measures aimed at eradicating the "toxic" atmosphere and raising standards within the club.

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has voiced support for head coach Ruben Amorim's firm approach to changing the club's negative culture.

Following United's Europa League final loss to Tottenham in May, Shaw questioned whether he and his teammates were good enough to represent the club, remarks that sparked criticism, including from former captain Gary Neville.

Reflecting on those comments, Shaw explained they came from frustration and the emotional pain of a defeat that dashed United's hopes of European qualification after finishing 15th in the Premier League.

In response, Amorim took decisive action by raising expectations in the dressing room and excluding five senior players, among them Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho.

"It’s clear from the outside what the situation has been," Shaw said. "For much of my time here in recent years, the environment has been very negative. It’s been quite toxic and unhealthy. We need a positive, healthy atmosphere filled with good energy and happiness. When that happens, players feel free to express themselves."

"Ruben demands a strong mentality. He insists on giving 100 percent—anything less, like 85 or 90 percent, won’t suffice. Especially this season, if you’re not doing the right things, you won’t play."

Shaw, 30, emphasized that senior players must reinforce these standards.

"The experienced players have to demand more every day," he said. "That means maintaining high levels in training, punctuality, and discipline. The manager doesn’t care who you are—if you don’t meet his demands, you won’t play. We fully support that."

Although Shaw did not directly mention the so-called 'bomb squad'—Rashford, Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia, and Antony—or place all responsibility on them, he acknowledged that Amorim has made it clear everyone must prioritize the team.

Shaw admitted the aftermath of the final defeat left the squad uncertain about the club’s direction.

"I don’t regret what I said, but right after the game, your head is hot and you speak without thinking," he said. "After that final and a difficult season, none of us were good enough. I had a terrible year and was angry about everything, which is why I spoke out."

Luke Shaw highlights the importance of a positive, demanding culture at Manchester United, backing Ruben Amorim's efforts to raise standards and rebuild the team’s mentality after a challenging season.
