Liverpool Pharmacy Launches UK-First Contraceptive Implant Service

Green Lane Pharmacy in Liverpool is the first pharmacy in the UK to offer free contraceptive implants through a 12-month NHS pilot scheme aimed at reducing unintended pregnancies and widening access to contraception.

NHS and Liverpool City Council launched the initiative to tackle high pregnancy rates in the city and serve areas with limited services. Implant procedures are usually limited to sexual health clinics or GP surgeries.

Pharmacist Matt Harvey welcomed the community-based service: “Being open six days a week and located near student accommodation means we can reach those who need it most.”

Sian Davies from Axess Sexual Health added, “Visiting a pharmacy is more discreet than a sexual health clinic, where appointments can be daunting.”

Plan to Expand

Harry Doyle, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, said the pilot “will help more people obtain the contraception they need and reduce the risk of unintended pregnancies in the city.” He noted plans to extend the service to other pharmacies after evaluating the pilot.

The contraceptive implant is a small, flexible rod placed under the upper arm skin by a qualified clinician. It releases progestogen to prevent pregnancy for up to three years as a long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC).
