Jerusalem Zoo Worker Killed by Escaped Tiger
A behind-the-scenes tour at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo ended in tragedy after a tiger escaped its enclosure and fatally attacked a staff member.
A 36-year-old zoo employee, Uriel Nuri, died after being attacked by a Sumatran tiger that escaped its enclosure during a behind-the-scenes tour at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo on Friday morning.
Nuri was preparing enrichment activities for the big cats when the animal slipped into an inner courtyard. Despite immediate efforts by staff and emergency services, he succumbed to extensive upper-body injuries at Hadassah University Hospital-Ein Kerem.
The zoo has closed its grounds and is cooperating with Israeli police in a full investigation to determine how the tiger managed to exit its enclosure. Zoo officials affirmed that visitors, shielded by glass, were never at risk.

The zoo, known for its focus on biblical and endangered species, expressed deep sorrow. Last year, a crocodile incident also led to staff injury, underscoring ongoing safety concerns in animal enrichment programs.
The escape highlights critical gaps in enclosure safety protocols and the high risks faced by zookeepers during animal care activities.
