HSBC apologises after online banking and app outage

HSBC apologises after online banking and app outage affects thousands, marking another major banking IT failure.

HSBC has apologised after customers in the UK were unable to access their accounts online or via the mobile app.

Since 11:00 BST, thousands have reported issues on Downdetector. According to HSBC’s service status page, phone and in-branch services remain available, and card payments are unaffected.

"We're really sorry and are investigating as a matter of urgency," the bank said in a post on X.

Customers took to social media to express concern, with some highlighting branch closures across the UK. HSBC closed 114 UK branches in 2022 before pledging not to shut any more until 2026.

The bank has not given a timeframe for restoring its digital services but said it is "working hard" to resolve the issue.

This outage follows a series of IT failures across the sector; in May, banks reported that 1.2 million customers were affected by disruptions in 2024, and since 2023, major banks and building societies have logged around 803 hours of outages.
