The assessments and surveys were repeated two years later to observe changes.
On average, children spent about 2.5 hours per day watching TV, 30 minutes on social media, and one hour playing video games. The findings revealed that children who played video games more than the average showed an increase of 2.5 points above the mean in their cognitive test scores during the follow-up assessment. In contrast, watching TV or using social media did not produce significant positive or negative effects.
These results align with recent studies indicating that intelligence is not a fixed trait but is influenced by environmental factors.
The researchers acknowledge certain limitations of their study: it focused solely on children from the United States and did not differentiate between types of video games, making it challenging to compare results with children from other countries who may have different gaming habits. Moreover, since participants self-reported their gaming time, the accuracy of this data might be affected.
