On the night of March 6, Visa announced the suspension of all operations in Russia, with Mastercard quickly following suit.
As a result, all payment cards from these systems issued in Russia will be disabled outside the country. Similarly, Visa and Mastercard cards issued by foreign financial institutions will cease to work within Russia.
Domestically, Russian cardholders can continue to use their cards without interruption. Representatives from Sberbank confirmed that customers can still withdraw cash, transfer funds using card numbers, and make payments both in physical stores and online across Russia. This is possible because all domestic transactions are processed through Russia's National Payment Card System (NSPK), which operates independently of foreign payment networks.
Additionally, reports indicate that Visa and Mastercard cards will no longer be supported on digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay within Russia.
The Central Bank advises travelers departing Russia to carry cash in US dollars and to use the 'Mir' payment card in countries where it is accepted, including Turkey, Vietnam, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, South Ossetia, and Abkhazia.
