Discover the New Wave of Vector Design Tools

Explore the emerging vector graphic applications challenging established software with innovative features and user-friendly design.

Fame and demand for Pixelmator have sparked a rapid emergence of vector graphic editors, multiplying like rabbits within a year. Although quality still trails quantity, the progress is undeniable.

The journey began with DrawBerry, which suffered from poor ergonomics, lagging performance, and numerous glitches. Now, a new contender, VectorDesigner, has arrived boasting a version number above 1.0 (compared to DrawBerry's modest 0.4) and priced competitively at around $70, making it an affordable alternative to industry giants like Adobe Illustrator.

So, what does this promising tool offer? It includes a fundamental set of shapes such as rectangles, ovals, rounded rectangles, polygons, and stars. Users can edit Bézier curves and work with text, group objects, and perform essential Boolean operations with intuitive icons for ease of use. Additionally, it integrates with iPhoto libraries and the online Flickr service, plus a suite of basic filters to enhance creativity.

However, the software is still in its infancy. Users report frequent freezes, crashes, and unresponsive controls during use. The interface also needs significant refinement, giving the impression that the developers may not have extensively tested the user experience themselves.

Despite these challenges, VectorDesigner shows great potential. If developers focus on improving stability and usability rather than rushing to monetize, this tool could become a viable lightweight alternative to Illustrator within the next year or so. At present, though, it doesn’t justify its price tag, as the market introduction seems premature.

For now, Adobe Illustrator and Inkscape remain the top choices. Encouragingly, efforts are underway to create a native OS X port of Inkscape, which would be a welcome improvement over the current X11-based version.
