China's Cybersecurity Group Urges Review of Intel Chips Over Security Concerns

A Chinese industry association has called for a national security review of Intel's products sold in China, raising concerns about potential risks to the country's security and consumer rights.

Key Highlights

  • The Cybersecurity Association of China (CSAC) claims Intel's products pose a threat to China's national security.
  • CSAC recommends that the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) conduct a thorough security review of Intel's offerings.
  • This follows China's previous ban on Micron Technology products over similar security concerns.

Shares of Intel (INTC) experienced a decline following statements from the Cybersecurity Association of China suggesting that the semiconductor giant's products sold within China should undergo rigorous national security evaluations.

According to Reuters, CSAC accused Intel of persistently compromising China's interests and security. While CSAC is not a government entity, it has urged the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), the nation's internet regulatory authority, to initiate a comprehensive review of Intel's chip products.

"We recommend initiating a network security review of Intel products available in China to effectively protect the country's national security and safeguard the legitimate rights of Chinese consumers," stated CSAC via Reuters.

Previous Measures Against U.S. Chipmakers in China

Intel has yet to issue an official response to these allegations.

This move follows a precedent set in 2023 when the CAC prohibited the sale of Micron Technology's products within China due to similar national security concerns.

Intel's stock price dropped approximately 4% early Wednesday, later recovering slightly to trade around 1% lower at $22.42 by early afternoon ET, marking a significant decline of over 50% year-to-date.
