2025 World Aquatics Championships: GB Claim First Gold in Singapore with 4x200m Freestyle Relay

Great Britain topped the podium in the men's 4x200m freestyle relay to win their first gold medal at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.

Great Britain secured their first gold at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore after winning the men's 4x200m freestyle relay.

Olympic champions Matt Richards, James Guy, Jack McMillan and Duncan Scott touched the wall in 6:59.84, with Scott fending off China in the anchor leg and finishing more than a second ahead of his rival. Australia claimed bronze.

The victory saw GB reclaim the world title they last held in 2023.

On the same day, Ben Proud advanced to the men's 50m freestyle final after clocking 21.61 seconds in the semi-finals. Angharad Evans finished fifth in the women's 200m breaststroke, Luke Greenbank was eighth in the men's 200m backstroke, and Jordan Houlden narrowly missed a medal with fourth place in the men's 3m springboard.

Qin Haiyang Strikes Again

Earlier, China's Qin Haiyang celebrated his second gold of the championships by winning the men's 200m breaststroke. He was followed by Japan's Ippei Watanabe in silver and Netherlands' Caspar Corbeau in bronze.

Qin, 26, who won the 100m breaststroke this week, has returned to form after failing to reach the Olympic final in Paris and overcoming a doping controversy in 2021 when WADA accepted Chinese authorities' claim of food contamination.

Other Highlights

  • Marrit Steenbergen denied Mollie O'Callaghan a sprint double by winning the women's 100m freestyle.
  • Olympic champion Hubert Kos edged out South Africa's Pieter Coetze in the men's 200m backstroke.
  • American Kate Douglass set a championship record of 2:18.50 to take gold in the women's 200m breaststroke ahead of Russia's Evgeniia Chikunova and South Africa's Kaylene Corbett.
Great Britain's relay victory ended their gold medal drought and underscored their depth in freestyle, while multiple Olympic champions and rising stars continued to shine in Singapore.
