2025 Insights: 9 Key Differences Between Single Dads and Single Moms in Parenting Roles
Explore 9 revealing ways single dads experience parenting differently than single moms, highlighting societal expectations and challenges unique to each.
Parenting responsibilities often fall unevenly between mothers and fathers, influenced by deep-rooted societal stereotypes. While these distinctions might seem harmless, they can create tension and unfair expectations, especially when traditional 'dad' roles are sidelined, leaving moms to manage multiple tasks alone.
However, gender-based task assignments are outdated. My late wife enlightened me that chores and duties aren’t divided by gender but by necessity. If something needs attention, whoever is available should handle it.
Together, we balanced household duties effectively—cooking and cleaning were shared, and while some roles aligned with stereotypes, like me handling the trash, the focus was always on workload rather than gender.
Single parenting removes the luxury of shared duties. Before losing my wife, I admired single moms and wondered how they managed it all. Now, as a single dad, I notice society’s expectations for men in parenting are surprisingly low. Despite handling the same responsibilities, I’m often praised for basic tasks.
This raises questions: Are single dads viewed as less capable, or are societal expectations simply skewed in favor of mothers?
Here are nine ways societal expectations differ for single dads compared to single moms:
1. Morning Routines

Mom’s role: Gently wake kids with a kiss, tidy their hair, softly encourage them to rise, prepare breakfast, clean up, and plan dinner.
Dad’s role: Rely on the alarm clock, offer a quick snack like a pop tart, and leave a pizza order note.
2. School Engagement

Mom’s role: Participate in PTA, attend meetings, volunteer as classroom mom, bake for birthdays, and meet with teachers regularly.
Dad’s role: Memorize the homeroom teacher’s name for occasional contact.
3. Knowing Children’s Friends
Mom’s role: Meet friends, arrange playdates, host parents for dinner, and provide transportation.
Dad’s role: Struggle to remember which friend is which, making a mental note to improve.
4. Laundry Responsibilities
Mom’s role: Manage laundry weekly or daily, iron clothes immediately, fold and store neatly.
Dad’s role: Do laundry only when absolutely necessary, rely on steam from a hot shower to de-wrinkle.
5. House Cleaning
Mom’s role: Vacuum, dust meticulously, clean hard-to-reach places, and organize surfaces.
Dad’s role: Question the need for dusting altogether.
6. Teaching Social Etiquette
Mom’s role: Act as mediator in school conflicts, discuss behavior, and communicate with other parents.
Dad’s role: Teach kids self-defense with straightforward advice.
7. Pet Care
Mom’s role: Maintain pet hygiene daily, ensure fresh water and clean feeding bowls.
Dad’s role: Replace the litter box only when the smell becomes unbearable.
8. Bathroom Cleaning
Mom’s role: Clean toilets and showers weekly with proper disinfectants, ensure sparkling fixtures.
Dad’s role: Wipe the toilet seat and consider the job done.
9. Preparing Meals
Mom’s role: Research nutritious recipes, shop fresh ingredients, master cooking techniques, and balance food groups.
Dad’s role: Opt for simple favorites like grilled cheese sandwiches.
Final Thoughts
After my wife passed, she had already arranged for friends to help maintain the yard, understanding that all parenting and household duties would rest on me. Even weeks after her passing, she continued to care for our family better than I could.
Despite the low expectations set for single dads, I strive to provide excellent care for my children. Often, the standards for mothers are so high that dads appear underwhelming by comparison, though they may be doing just fine.
