Zack Snyder Shares Intriguing Insights on Potential Justice League Continuations

Plans for at least four films that may never reach the big screen.

Following the release of Zack Snyder's director's cut of Justice League, Esquire conducted an extensive interview with the filmmaker. Snyder expressed his excitement about finally delivering his version, despite working on it without compensation. He also revealed that he avoided watching the original 2017 release, following advice from his wife Debbie and friend Christopher Nolan.

When asked about the prospects of sequels and spin-offs, Snyder stated, “I understand the studio isn’t keen on producing films involving me. I also recognize that market demand is crucial. I’d be very surprised if Warner Bros. greenlit any new projects. Yet, I never expected to be asked to rework Justice League in the first place.”

Like any director, Snyder kept notes for potential continuations and side stories. Here are a couple of ideas he envisioned for solo films:

• A standalone Cyborg movie that would explore the hero's origin story, similar to Wonder Woman and Aquaman. Snyder regrets not convincing Warner Bros. to produce it before Justice League.
• In late 2015, there was talk of an Atom film to be shot entirely in China, starring Zheng Kai. However, the project stalled during early discussions.

Of course, a direct sequel to Justice League was also planned. Here’s a glimpse of what the sequel and third installment might have included.

The storyline would revolve around an alternate future where the heroes must send The Flash back in time to warn Batman, enabling him to save Lois Lane. To power the time machine, they would retrieve the Mother Box from a partially destroyed Gotham cathedral and bring it to the Batcave.

The night before the mission, the team would share a secret dinner where each hero recounts personal stories. For example, Joker would reveal the death of Robin. The climax would see Superman killing everyone except The Flash, who miraculously escapes through time.

The third film would explore the consequences of that time jump. Batman sacrifices himself, culminating in an epic battle between Earth’s defenders and Darkseid.

The final installment [Snyder did not specify whether this would be the third or fourth film] would center on Superman as the last hope. Following Batman’s demise, Superman naturally assumes leadership of the Justice League. Meanwhile, Wonder Woman becomes queen of Themyscira, leading the Amazons against Darkseid, and Arthur takes the throne of Atlantis. Superman’s arc would transform him from the primary antagonist to the ultimate hero.

Snyder shared, “I thought it would be compelling—Superman is usually seen as unchanging, but I wanted to craft a hero who evolves the most throughout this narrative.”
