Who Can Stay Calm Amid the Omicron Surge? Discover Who’s Less Vulnerable to the New Variant

Explore which groups are naturally protected against the Omicron variant and why not everyone needs to fear this new COVID-19 strain.

Recent findings reveal that not everyone will be affected by the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

Amid widespread concern over the highly contagious and unpredictable Omicron variant, many are bracing for its rapid global spread. Originating in South Africa in November, Omicron has swiftly reached even the most remote areas worldwide in less than a month. Governments and health authorities are preparing for a potential fifth wave and strategizing to curb this evolving threat.

  • Who Should Avoid COVID-19 Vaccination: Identifying Contraindications

Experts warn that even vaccinated individuals and younger populations are susceptible to infection. Omicron’s ability to evade antibodies and cause asymptomatic cases means carriers can unknowingly spread the virus for up to seven days without showing respiratory symptoms.

Dr. Alexander Myasnikov advises those infected with Omicron to self-isolate at home rather than seek hospitalization, which could expose them to more severe variants like Delta. "It's crucial to isolate Omicron patients at home for two to three days, rather than pursue treatment, since common respiratory infections don’t require specific therapy," he explains.

Despite Omicron’s rapid transmission, Dr. Myasnikov emphasizes that severe cases remain rare and mortality rates are significantly lower compared to earlier COVID-19 strains. Ultimately, most of the population will contract and recover from Omicron, with approximately 30% of people possessing innate immunity.

"People whose immune systems already protect them from acute respiratory infections are naturally shielded from Omicron," Myasnikov states.

This natural protection is rooted in genetic factors, meaning individuals cannot simply choose to join this resilient group. Their immune systems either prevent infection entirely or ensure the illness manifests with minimal or no symptoms.

"Some might barely notice symptoms, perhaps a mild cough for a couple of days," the doctor adds. "Despite the mildness, the infection occurred, leaving behind specific immunity."

Moreover, those who recently recovered from other seasonal coronaviruses in moderate to severe forms tend to have strong antibodies and memory immune cells. This primes their bodies to mount a rapid and effective immune response against Omicron.
