Mixed results fail to impress
United finished 15th last season with 42 points – their worst since 1989–90 – and have spent around £250m on new signings under Amorim. Despite a switch to his favoured 3-4-3 system, reminiscent of his Sporting successes, old issues have resurfaced.
"If the manager is honest, performances have actually declined," added Rooney, who netted 253 goals for United between 2004 and 2017.
Relegation form and midfield concerns
Early setbacks include a Carabao Cup defeat to League Two Grimsby and only two open-play goals in the league, leaving United with four points from four matches – their poorest start since 1992–93. Amorim’s 36% win rate is the lowest for any permanent United manager since WWII, with just a 26% league success rate.
Rooney criticised United’s midfield setup: "Playing with only two central players leaves the team overrun and outmuscled. If you’re struggling, you need three in midfield to compete."
