Heavy rains across Vietnam have claimed at least 90 lives and left 12 people missing, as floods and landslides battered several provinces.
The government says about 186,000 homes were damaged nationwide, and more than three million livestock were swept away. Officials estimate the damage toll runs into hundreds of millions of pounds.
The Dak Lak region has borne the brunt, with more than 60 fatalities confirmed since November 16, according to AFP.
The floods follow a spell of extreme weather, including Typhoons Kalmaegi and Bualoi, which struck in quick succession.
Power outages affected around 258,000 people on Sunday, while sections of major highways and railway lines were cut off. The military and police have been deployed to support relief operations in the hardest-hit areas.
The five most affected provinces are Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa, and Lam Dong, all in the south or south-central regions.
Mach Van Si, a farmer in Dak Lak, said the neighbourhood was utterly destroyed and everything was covered in mud.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired a virtual emergency meeting from South Africa, where he attended the G20 summit, to coordinate the response.
Rain totals surged to more than 1.5 metres in several areas in the days leading up to Friday, with some locations reaching levels not seen since 1993. Forecasters expect rainfall to ease in the coming days.
Experts say climate change is heightening Vietnam’s exposure to extreme weather, making typhoons stronger and more frequent.
