Groundbreaking insights from British researchers, featured in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, have shed light on the most effective way to train your abdominal muscles. Their study focused on the classic core exercise: lifting your torso toward your knees while lying on your back, including standard crunches.

After detailed muscle activity measurements, the researchers confirmed what personal trainers have long advised — but now with scientific backing. Plus, we include a bonus video demonstrating a highly effective core exercise.

Study Overview

The research involved British Army soldiers performing standard abdominal exercises continuously for two minutes: torso lifts and crunches from a lying position. The key variable was whether the soldiers' feet were anchored or free. Muscle activity in the abs and hip flexors was monitored throughout.

Key Findings

When feet were fixed, there was significant activation of the rectus femoris (a hip flexor muscle). This means that anchoring your feet during abdominal workouts engages your hip muscles, reducing the effectiveness of your core training. Additionally, this position increased strain on the lower back, potentially leading to injury.

For truly effective abdominal muscle engagement, perform exercises without fixing your feet—even if it feels less stable or you can do fewer repetitions. Free legs require more control and prevent hip flexors from compensating. Be mindful of your neck position: imagine holding a tennis ball between your chin and collarbone to avoid straining your neck or pulling your head forward, which can cause discomfort in unintended areas.

The included video demonstrates a core exercise performed on a fitness ball. In our experience, this challenge demands greater balance and attention to shoulder and neck alignment compared to floor exercises. Maintaining proper form prevents slipping and enhances muscle activation.
