Trump Urges Swift Progress as Gaza Peace Talks Begin

President Donald Trump calls for speed in indirect Gaza peace negotiations in Egypt as Israeli strikes persist and Hamas weighs parts of a U.S. 20-point plan.

Watch: Hostages could be freed 'very soon', says Trump

President Donald Trump has urged all parties to “move fast” as indirect peace talks between Israel and Hamas convene in Egypt on Monday.

The negotiations follow partial agreement by Hamas to a U.S. 20-point plan, including the release of hostages and the transfer of Gaza governance to technocrats. However, the group has not addressed disarmament or its role in future governance.

Trump said the first phase should finish this week and warned that “time is of the essence or massive bloodshed will follow.” He also predicted hostages would start to be freed “very soon” without significant changes to the plan.

Despite Trump’s appeal to “immediately stop the bombing,” Israeli air strikes continued. A government spokesperson said there is no ceasefire in place and that forces will respond defensively if threatened.

Reports from Gaza City describe overnight strikes that demolished residential buildings. Gaza’s health ministry reported 65 more deaths in the past 24 hours.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told CBS that bombing must halt to facilitate hostage releases. The plan proposes an immediate end to fighting and the exchange of 48 hostages—only 20 believed alive—for hundreds of detainees.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he hopes to announce hostage releases “in the coming days.” He has limited talks to a few days, according to the government spokesperson.

The Israeli delegation left for Cairo on Monday, while a Hamas team led by chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya arrived Sunday night. U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and Qatar’s foreign minister will also attend.

After seven months of war that has claimed over 67,000 Palestinian lives, this round of talks is seen as a critical opportunity for a ceasefire and hostage release.

Effective indirect talks in Egypt could set the stage for a ceasefire and hostage releases—time is critical to prevent further bloodshed.
