Total Lunar Eclipse 'Blood Moon' to Light Up UK Sky

A total lunar eclipse, showcasing a red "Blood Moon", will be visible in the UK on Sunday evening, weather permitting.

Stargazers across the UK are set to witness a rare total lunar eclipse on Sunday evening, when the Moon takes on a deep red hue as it passes through Earth's shadow.

The eclipse will begin in penumbral phase at 16:28 BST (17:28 UTC), with the partial phase starting at 17:27 BST (18:27 UTC). The total eclipse peaks at 19:11 BST, just before the Moon emerges above the horizon around 19:30, weather permitting.

Dr Edward Bloomer of the Royal Observatory Greenwich said, "Although the reddest phase may occur below the horizon in the UK, waiting for the Moon to rise offers a clear view of the solar system in action."

What is a lunar eclipse and a blood moon?

This is an illustrative diagram explaining a total lunar eclipse. The diagram shows the Sun on the left, casting light that is blocked by Earth in the centre. Earth's shadow extends to the right, where the Moon passes entirely through it. The diagram labels the different parts of the shadow: A dark central shadow where the Moon appears red due to the scattering of sunlight in Earth's atmosphere. Penumbra (lighter outer shadow), where only partial shading occurs. The Moon is shown on the right, appearing red due to the total eclipse. The INLIBER logo is present, and a note states that the diagram is not to scale.

A lunar eclipse happens when Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow that can turn the lunar surface red. Total eclipses, often called Blood Moons, occur when the Moon is entirely within Earth's darkest shadow, the umbra.

Other types include partial lunar eclipses, where only part of the Moon is shaded, and penumbral eclipses, which cause a faint dimming.

Blood Moon describes the red appearance caused by Rayleigh scattering, the same effect behind red sunsets and blue skies.

How to see it?

Find an open horizon view before 19:30 to spot the Moon as it rises in eclipse. Binoculars or a telescope will enhance the view, and unlike solar eclipses, it's safe to watch without eye protection. Check local weather forecasts for clear skies.

The next total lunar eclipse visible in the UK will occur on 28 August 2026.

The upcoming Blood Moon will not only offer a dramatic sky spectacle but also reveal the subtle interplay of sunlight and Earth's atmosphere casting a red glow on the lunar surface.
