Spain Names New Head Coach
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed that Montse Tome will leave her role as head coach on August 31 when her contract expires. Tome, 43, became Spain’s first female head coach in September 2023 and had previously served as assistant under Jorge Vilda.
During her tenure, Tome led Spain to victory in the inaugural Women’s Nations League in February and guided the team to a runner-up finish at UEFA Women’s Euro 2024 after a penalty shootout defeat by England on July 27.
Sonia Bermudez Steps Up
Former Spain captain Sonia Bermudez, 40, has been appointed as Tome’s successor. A decorated forward, Bermudez won nine league titles with Rayo Vallecano, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Levante during her playing career and earned 61 caps for her country.
Since retiring, Bermudez has served as head coach of Spain’s U23 women’s team and will now lead the senior national side into a new era.
This appointment marks a new chapter for Spain as former captain Sonia Bermudez brings her winning pedigree and leadership to the national team.
