Sir Richard Branson Mourns Wife Joan Branson, 80, After Five Decades Together

Sir Richard Branson mourns the death of his wife, Joan Branson, at 80, a devoted partner and mother whose warmth shaped his personal and public life.

Sir Richard Branson has announced the death of his wife, Joan Branson, at the age of 80, describing her as his best friend and guiding light. In a heartfelt post, the Virgin Group founder spoke of a five-decade partnership that helped shape both his family and his businesses.

The couple wed in 1989 and raised three children, Holly, Sam, and Clare Sarah, who tragically died just four days after birth. Branson’s tribute highlighted the profound impact Joan had on their lives and the strength she provided to their family.

In an emotional Instagram message, Branson wrote that Joan was his partner for 50 years, his rock, and the world to him. He did not reveal the cause of her passing, but the note made clear the depth of his personal loss. “Heartbroken to share that Joan, my wife and partner for 50 years, has passed away. She was my best friend, my rock, my guiding light, my world. Love you forever, Joan x.”

Tributes from their family followed. Sam Branson, one of their sons, called Joan “the kindest, most loving, warm and abundantly generous woman to walk this Earth,” expressing gratitude for the chance to call her mom.

Holly Branson has previously described her mother’s early life, recounting how Joan grew up in Glasgow and worked in a pawnbroker’s shop before moving to London. Holly said her father began courting her mother after repeatedly visiting the Portobello Road shop, and described Joan as a stay-at-home mum who offered hugs, wisdom, and a welcoming smile.

In a separate remembrance of their wedding anniversary, Sir Richard recalled falling for Joan almost instantly. He credited her with providing steady guidance that helped shape many of his major life decisions.

Branson remains one of the United Kingdom’s most recognizable entrepreneurs, launching Virgin Records in the 1970s before expanding into airlines, space travel, and digital ventures that define his diverse business empire.

Joan Branson’s passing marks the end of a long personal partnership that underpinned Branson’s approach to both life and leadership, underscoring the enduring importance of family in the public life of a celebrated business magnate.
