Shein Investigates Use of Luigi Mangione’s Likeness in Shirt Ad

Fast-fashion retailer Shein removed an image of accused killer Luigi Mangione modeling a shirt and is probing how his likeness appeared on its site.

Shein has launched an investigation after an image of Luigi Mangione, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York last year, was used to model a white, short-sleeved shirt on its website.

The product, priced at just under $10, appeared alongside the image until it was removed.

A Shein spokesperson told INLIBER News: "The image in question was removed immediately upon discovery. We have stringent standards for the content of listings on our platform and are conducting a thorough review to strengthen our monitoring processes."

It remains unclear how long the image was live or which seller uploaded it. Many speculate the likeness was generated by artificial intelligence, but the company has not confirmed this.

In April, Mangione pleaded not guilty to federal charges of murder and stalking in the fatal shooting of Thompson. Arrested in December, the 26-year-old faces trial with prosecutors seeking the death penalty if convicted.

The case has fueled debate over privatized healthcare, and some have hailed Mangione as a folk hero, with supporters gathering outside the courthouse at hearings.

This is the latest controversy involving his name and likeness. In December, INLIBER News filed a complaint with Apple after its new iPhone feature falsely summarized a notification to imply Mangione had shot himself. Apple suspended the feature following the error and other mistakes.

His legal team has not commented on the Shein incident.

Shein’s swift removal of the image and new review measures highlight the growing challenge of policing AI-generated or unauthorized content on global e-commerce platforms.
