Recognize Early Facial Signs of an Approaching Heart Attack

Learn how to identify subtle facial symptoms that may signal an imminent heart attack to protect yourself and your loved ones.

The quicker you recognize danger signs for yourself or a loved one, the greater the chance of preventing serious consequences.

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading health issue worldwide. Contrary to popular belief, heart attacks are not exclusive to the elderly; individuals under 40 are increasingly affected. While genetics play a role, lifestyle factors such as smoking, sedentary habits, and unhealthy diets are major contributors.

Maintaining a healthy heart demands a balanced diet and consistent physical activity.

Cardiologist Dr. Cheryl Litgow shared insights with Doctor Peter on how facial changes can indicate an impending heart attack.

“Most people associate heart attacks with severe chest pain radiating to the arm or jaw. While common, there are other vital symptoms to watch for,” says Dr. Litgow.

Before a heart attack, a person’s face may noticeably change. Warning signs include:

  • Sudden paleness;

  • A grayish tint to facial skin, especially visible in natural daylight;

  • Moist forehead and nose with visible sweat droplets despite a cool environment.

Additional symptoms may include nausea, shortness of breath, a pale-gray complexion with sweating, intense anxiety, and dizziness,” adds Dr. Litgow.

Special Precautions for Diabetics

Individuals with diabetes are at a higher risk of heart attacks and may experience silent heart attacks without obvious symptoms.

“Type 2 diabetics might experience subtle signs like mild indigestion or unusual chest discomfort and often underestimate their seriousness,” warns the expert.

If you or someone close has diabetes, monitor your health carefully and consult a physician if you notice:

  • Persistent dizziness;

  • Severe heartburn or chest pain;

  • Unexpected cold sweats;

  • Jaw or left arm discomfort.

Take care of your health!
