Rare Side Effects Identified in Sputnik V Vaccine: What You Need to Know

Explore the newly discovered rare side effects of the Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine, their symptoms, and how to manage them effectively.

The Gamaleya Center has recently updated the Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine guidelines after identifying rare side effects occurring in approximately 1% of recipients.

Currently, Sputnik V stands as one of the most extensively studied vaccines developed domestically against COVID-19. Research consistently shows its strong efficacy in preventing severe illness and reducing complications related to the virus. It has also been noted for having fewer contraindications and side effects compared to other vaccines.

However, recent updates to the vaccine's instructions reveal two uncommon adverse effects: osteoarthritis and photophobia. These side effects are classified as "uncommon" and affect about one in every hundred vaccinated individuals.

Osteoarthritis is a chronic condition characterized by the deterioration of cartilage and surrounding tissues in the joints, leading to pain and stiffness. Without timely medical intervention, joint damage may progress to immobility.

Complete recovery from osteoarthritis is challenging and often requires prolonged treatment, including pain management and systemic medication over several months.

Photophobia manifests as discomfort or pain when exposed to any light source, whether natural or artificial. Symptoms include eye redness and excessive tearing. Medical consultation is essential to develop a treatment plan that alleviates symptoms and helps the eyes adapt to light exposure.

If you experience unusual sensitivity to everyday lighting conditions after vaccination, it is crucial to consult a healthcare provider promptly.

Other previously reported side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, and indigestion, as well as nasal congestion, swollen lymph nodes, throat irritation, headaches, and fainting. These symptoms are even rarer, occurring in approximately 1 out of 10,000 vaccinated individuals.
