After a lengthy break, I recently returned to the gym and immediately felt the consequences of prolonged sitting. Despite frequently walking with my child, I spend most of my day seated at a computer. It was only during workouts that I truly noticed the stiffness and discomfort in my back, which felt almost rigid. My wrists were also sore, but that’s another story.
As if responding to my silent complaints, the universe introduced me to an insightful article by Gina Trapani about working at a computer while standing.

It’s well-known that prolonged sitting impairs circulation in the lower body. Women, in particular, may experience vein issues, especially when crossing their legs, and pelvic organ function can also be affected. Few of us maintain perfect posture at the desk, which leads to strain on the back and neck. Our posture often resembles that of vultures—neck craned forward, back hunched, swollen legs, and a seat molded by the chair.

Initially, she stood for several hours before sitting again. Her legs, back, and neck ached. However, over time, her body adapted, posture improved, and she even burned extra calories by standing.
That said, standing all day isn’t ideal either. For instance, hairdressers frequently suffer leg problems from standing throughout their shifts, as do workers who spend most of their day at counters. Therefore, the optimal workspace allows alternating between sitting and standing. This approach benefits spine and leg health, refreshes the mind, and helps burn calories.
Sergey Petrenko also uses a height-adjustable desk, switching between sitting and standing, and appears satisfied with this setup.

Some advanced users even work on a treadmill desk, although for me, that’s nearly impossible.
