Pakistan floods leave over 200 missing in Buner district
Heavy monsoon rains in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province have left more than 200 people missing and hundreds dead amid flash floods and landslides, with climate change worsening the impact.
Monsoon Floods Leave Over 200 People Missing in Buner District
Authorities in north-west Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province report at least 209 people missing in Buner district after flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains.
Since June, torrential downpours have claimed more than 300 lives across Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, primarily in the mountainous region.
Rescue Efforts Hampered by Damaged Roads
Rescue teams have buried eight unidentified bodies in Buner, as families remain unreachable due to destroyed roadways, said Jehangir Khan, spokesperson for the deputy commissioner’s office.
Provincial officials warn that the missing count could grow. In nearby Shangla district, "dozens" of villagers are unaccounted for, according to Asfandyar Khattak of the disaster management authority.
Widespread Devastation
Flash floods also struck Indian-administered Kashmir, where at least 60 people died recently. Back in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, nine lives were lost this week, and five more in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Government forecasts predict more heavy rainfall until 21 August, with several zones already declared disaster areas.
Climate Change Amplifies Risk
Monsoon rains, essential for South Asia’s water supply, now arrive with greater intensity and frequency due to climate change. Rapid glacier melt in the north destabilises slopes, increasing the likelihood of landslides and flash floods.
Experts warn that climate-driven glacial retreat and extreme monsoon rains are combining to intensify flooding and landslides, endangering vulnerable communities.
