Discover Your Unique Path

Important Note

Meditation can be a valuable tool in alleviating depression symptoms for some individuals. Experts emphasize that meditation should complement professional care and not replace comprehensive mental health treatment.

Initially, meditation felt perplexing to me. Living with cerebral palsy and multiple mental health challenges, including depression and anxiety, I struggled to grasp the practice. Despite my brain-related physical disability, I found meditation both daunting and intriguing. Observing many around me embracing meditation, even in the Canadian prairies where I reside, I wondered why I hadn’t yet explored it.

When first introduced to mindfulness meditation, I was confused. The idea of sitting still, visualizing traffic passing by, and observing thoughts without engagement was foreign. My mind often drifted to daily tasks, work at an arts nonprofit, or the weather—rarely settling into the calm focus meditation encourages.

After months of experimentation, I found my rhythm with yoga nidra, a form of guided meditation. I hope this guide helps you navigate your meditation journey with greater ease and confidence.

How Meditation Supports Depression Management

Depression’s roots are complex, involving genetics, brain physiology, stress, and anxiety. Brent Nelson, MD, an adult interventional psychiatrist at PrairieCare, highlights the brain’s intricate network as key to understanding meditation’s role in depression care.

“With 100 billion neurons and 100 trillion connections, the brain’s complexity is immense,” Dr. Nelson explains. “Depression’s causes are multifaceted, often intertwined with anxiety or trauma, and influenced by stress and genetic factors.”

Meditation is integrated with treatments like medication, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and transcranial magnetic stimulation, rather than used in isolation.

Dr. Nelson frequently recommends starting with mindfulness meditation to help patients anchor their awareness in the present, reducing fixation on past regrets or future worries common in depression.

“Mindfulness meditation encourages brain connectivity focused on the here and now, counteracting tendencies to dwell on past or future anxieties often seen in depression,” he adds.

Julie Potiker, a certified mindful self-compassion instructor at UCSD’s Center for Mindfulness, credits meditation for her recovery from depression, including postpartum depression.

“Meditation isn’t vague or mystical,” Potiker shares. “Having experienced clinical depression and antidepressant use, I embraced mindful self-compassion, which transformed my life and inspired me to teach it.”

Non-Medication Approaches to Combat Depression

Getting Started with Meditation

Potiker advocates beginning with loving-kindness meditation, focusing on self-compassion and gratitude, which can be especially healing for those battling depression. She advises starting small to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

“I encourage micro-moments—brief pauses each hour to look outside, take a short walk, listen to a favorite song, or engage in any activity that brings bodily joy and gratitude,” she explains. “These moments, though brief, build a foundation for mindfulness.”

Effective Meditation Styles

A 2015 study analyzed seven meditation techniques for their impact on depression:

  • Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy
  • Patañjali Yoga
  • Qigong
  • Sahaj Yoga
  • Inner Resources Meditation
  • Sudarshan Kriya Yoga
  • Tai Chi

Dr. Nelson advises consulting your healthcare team to identify meditation resources tailored to your needs, including university-affiliated programs specializing in mental health meditation practices.

“Collaborating with a multidisciplinary care team ensures personalized guidance and reliable support,” he emphasizes.
