Microsoft Separates Teams from Office in 2025: Pricing and Global Rollout Details

In 2025, Microsoft is unbundling Teams from its Office suite worldwide to address antitrust issues, allowing businesses to choose standalone Teams or Office without Teams at competitive prices.

Highlights of Microsoft's Teams Unbundling

  • Microsoft is officially selling Teams separately from its Office suite across all global markets in 2024.
  • This move follows the initial separation in Europe and Switzerland last year, aimed at resolving antitrust investigations triggered by Salesforce's Slack complaint in 2020.
  • Starting Monday, companies can modify their subscriptions to select Office plans without Teams or opt for Teams as a standalone product.

Microsoft (MSFT) has announced a significant change by detaching its collaboration tool Teams from the Office bundle worldwide. This strategic decision is designed to alleviate regulatory scrutiny related to antitrust concerns.

The separation was first implemented in the European Economic Area and Switzerland in 2023, following investigations into Microsoft's bundling practices. Now, this unbundling is expanding globally to offer customers greater flexibility and transparency.

A Microsoft representative shared, "To provide clear options for our customers, we are extending the unbundling of Teams from Microsoft 365 and Office 365 beyond Europe to all customers globally."

Introduced into the Office suite in 2017, Teams saw exponential growth during the pandemic as remote collaboration became essential. The unbundling allows businesses to tailor their subscriptions better according to their needs.

Effective immediately, organizations can continue with their current Office packages or switch to new configurations that exclude Teams. Pricing for Office without Teams ranges from $7.75 to $54.75 per user per month for new commercial customers, while standalone Teams subscriptions start at $5.25.

As of 2:45 p.m. ET on Monday, Microsoft shares rose by 0.5% to $422.83, reflecting a 14% increase year-to-date and over 47% growth in the past 12 months.
