How did your journey into the presentation industry begin?
I've been immersed in the world of presentations for the past seven years.
After working at Unilever, I noticed widespread inefficiencies in visual communication within corporate settings. This motivated me to take on presentation design projects, eventually leading me to establish my own studio, Metaforma.
Our mission is to help companies communicate effectively through visual storytelling. Our presentations often resemble films or animated shorts. One of our proudest projects is the visualization of Kia Motors' strategy.
Why do so many presentations fail to capture interest?
In many educational systems, there’s no focused training on crafting effective presentations. Students often create slides just to get grades, not out of genuine interest. As a result, neither presenters nor audiences truly engage with the content.
The biggest obstacle to a great presentation is lacking a clear purpose.
To inspire and connect with your audience, understanding storytelling, dramaturgy, and slide design is essential. Unfortunately, these skills are rarely taught in schools or universities.
Most presentation designers come from diverse backgrounds—law, marketing, and more—so there’s no single standard. The best way to improve is through consistent practice and a genuine desire to communicate effectively.
What common mistakes do people make when preparing presentations?
Many presentations lack meaningful headlines. Key messages are often buried in the text or placed at the bottom of slides, while the top features vague titles like “Strategy” or “Our Achievements.”
Craft your headlines so that your presentation can be understood by reading only them, with slide content supporting and enriching these points.
Don’t obsess over perfecting each slide in one go. Instead, work iteratively: start with simple white slides and basic fonts, then gradually add images, backgrounds, and accents. This approach is known as the progressive JPEG method.
This method ensures your presentation is always ready at varying stages of completion, allowing you to review and refine your slides multiple times to catch overlooked errors.
What are the key elements of a successful presentation?
I recommend following four essential steps, supported by a handy checklist:
- Purpose: Honestly ask yourself, “Why am I making this presentation?” and “Is this the best way to solve the problem?” Informing alone isn’t enough; your goal should be to change opinions or inspire action.
- Script: Plan your narrative flow and create a simple storyboard. Avoid copying all your Word or Excel content directly into slides. Remove unnecessary details and turn your content into a compelling story with a clear progression.
- Slides: Keep slides simple and structured. Embrace white space and avoid cluttering with irrelevant images. Each slide should convey one clear idea, reflected in its headline.
- Delivery: Rehearse multiple times and arrive early to test equipment and familiarize yourself with the venue.
How can one deliver presentations confidently?
With a clear purpose and well-structured content, delivering your presentation becomes manageable. At the very least, you won’t fail.
Many avoid rehearsing, believing it’s more authentic to speak spontaneously. This is a misconception.
Preparation is not the enemy of spontaneity.
Practice extensively. Steve Jobs was known for his intense rehearsals, requiring his team to repeat their parts until flawless.
Ideally, rehearse in front of a listener—friend, colleague, or spouse—or record yourself. If after 5–10 minutes the audience loses interest, it’s time to revise your content.
As Nancy Duarte revealed in her TED Talks, successful presentations create contrast and maintain tension by switching between positive and negative points, keeping the audience engaged with a dynamic storyline. Without conflict, presentations become dull and ineffective.
What does your workspace look like?
To stay creative, I find it important to shift my focus regularly.
When working from home, I avoid sitting at the computer all day. I use other tools like whiteboards and notebooks. I always keep a thermos of hot water nearby for continuous tea brewing without distractions.
Changing locations also boosts productivity. Working from a tea house or café helps me find fresh design inspiration in posters or graffiti along the way.
I prefer analog methods like drawing, using sticky notes, and handwritten notes. All our presentation concepts and scripts at Metaforma start on the whiteboard.
Favorite Apps and Tools
- Evernote and Google Calendar: Synced across all devices, they help me keep content and schedules organized.
- Gmail Telegram Bot: Notifies me of new emails via messenger, so I only check my inbox when necessary.
- Backblaze: Cloud backup service ensuring data safety beyond Google Drive syncing.
- Focus Keeper (iPhone): Helps me implement the Pomodoro technique, track time, and plan days with clear priorities aligned to long-term goals.
Presentation Software Preferences
My favorite tool is Keynote for its simplicity and elegant interface, much easier than PowerPoint.
Recently, I completed a major project using Google Slides, which is excellent for team collaboration with real-time comments and editing.
I've also been exploring Tilda and Readymag as alternatives to traditional presentation software. Their web-based formats and advanced animation capabilities offer dynamic ways to share content beyond static PDFs.
Do you have hobbies that fuel your creativity?
It’s impossible to energize others and create great projects without maintaining your own vitality.
My wife Yulia, who is also my life partner and collaborator at Metaforma, and I practice joint morning routines including joint yoga and joint meditation sessions in the evenings.
Sports are my top energy source. I enjoy swimming and completed a 1.2-mile river swim after training intensively, supported by my wife. Recently, I’ve started snowboarding, rock climbing, and an intensive online yoga workout course.
