For the past two decades, dancer Philip Stepin has been basking in the applause of admirers almost every day. As a shining star of the Mariinsky Theatre, he recently earned the prestigious title of premier. According to Stepin, he learned about his promotion on stage just before the performance of "The Bronze Horseman." Following a touching tradition, he celebrated by treating his colleagues to fruits and pastries—yes, ballet dancers also have a sweet tooth! Currently, Stepin's repertoire includes iconic roles such as Basil in "Don Quixote," Count Albert in "Giselle," Prince Siegfried in "Swan Lake," among many others. Yet, even with his premier status, Stepin continues to strive for artistic perfection.

Born in Leningrad into a ballet family, Philip Stepin has often acknowledged that his parents kept him disciplined throughout his childhood, a fact he now deeply appreciates. His father, Alexander Stepin, is a ballet artist, a professor at the A. Y. Vaganova Russian Ballet Academy, a distinguished Russian coach, and choreographer of world, European, and Russian figure skating champions. His mother was a dancer in Leonid Yakobson's troupe.

Philip began ballet training as a very young boy and, despite the challenges, never considered giving up his passion. Throughout his career, he has missed only a few rehearsals, mostly due to injuries. In 2005, he graduated with honors from the A. Y. Vaganova Russian Ballet Academy (under the tutelage of Boris Bregvadze) and was immediately accepted into the Mariinsky Theatre troupe. By 2009, he became a soloist, and now, he proudly holds the title of premier. In March 2020, Stepin was nominated for the "Golden Mask" award for his role in the production "Push Comes to Shove" by modernist choreographer Twyla Tharp—a role originally created for Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Stepin enjoys a vast fanbase, with many requesting tickets exclusively for performances featuring him at the Mariinsky Theatre box office. His exceptional grace and technical skill are frequently praised, but one cannot overlook those striking blue eyes that add to his charm.

Despite having many admirers, Philip Stepin's heart belongs to ballerina Vlada Borodulina, also a graduate of the A. Y. Vaganova Russian Ballet Academy and a fellow Mariinsky Theatre artist. Although they rarely share the stage together, they cherish their time off, often traveling. Fans regularly admire their travel photos, but fishing is a special shared hobby for the couple.

"Becoming a premier is not an end goal for me. I always aim to dance better than before. With every performance, I strive to eliminate mistakes. My teacher and I analyze each show meticulously, exploring roles from different perspectives. This promotion gives me extra motivation for creative exploration," Stepin shares.

Throughout his long ballet career, Philip Stepin has performed nearly all his dream roles but expresses a desire to dance in "Marko Spada" at the Bolshoi Theatre. He cherishes his profession most because every day on stage is a new life lived and an opportunity to become part of masterpieces.
