A 59-year-old man from Great Harwood, Lancashire, has been arrested on suspicion of malicious communications after sending racist messages to England defender Jess Carter during the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.

Lancashire Police detained the suspect earlier this week and released him under investigation. Cheshire Police Chief Constable Mark Roberts, who led the inquiry, described the abuse as "disgusting and appalling" and stressed that no one should face racial harassment online.

After the July tournament, the UK Football Policing Unit collaborated with social media platforms to identify offenders. Roberts, also the National Police Chiefs’ Council lead for football policing, praised Carter for cooperating and warned that more arrests are expected.

Lancashire officers released bodycam footage of the arrest, with PC Dan Fish affirming that hate crime in any form will not be tolerated and that police will "leave no stone unturned" to hold perpetrators to account.
